According to Instagram experts, hashtags remain one of the key features of the platform. Not sure where to start your hashtag journey? We’ve got a simple guide and handout to help.
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
You can currently use up to 30 hashtags on a single post.
How many hashtags should I use?
The jury is still out on how many hashtags are optimal. Some experts say 5-10, while others suggest using all 30.
My personal view on them is because there is no strong consensus, using all 30 can be an opportunity to kick start your growth.
How to get to 30 hashtags
Thinking of thirty different hashtags can sometimes be a challenge. Thankfully, a lot of hashtags are somewhat duplicates in that adding a plural ‘s’ creates a different variation.
For example, using the hashtag #AZHome can be turned into another hashtag of #AZHomes with an entirely different reach.
Think of what is also in the photo as well. For example, if it’s a photo of a kitchen you can tag things like:
All of the above hashtags describe trending kitchen terms that audiences search for. They are specific, relevant, and popular enough to have a community who follow for that category of content.

Do post counts matter?
Yes and no.
For common hashtags like #family and #love there are millions of posts with the term being posted each minute, so using a popular term like those are hard to rank for. The second you post, your image will sink to the bottom when competing with professional influencers with millions of followers.
Instead of how many posts a hashtag has, think of its relevance to the content you’re posting.
For example, if you are posting a photo of a home you are showing, you could use the hashtag #house with 35+ million posts and get an audience of people from around the world who like homes, OR you could use #azhomes with about 35,000 posts and be in front of home buyers and other real estate professionals looking for listings in Arizona.
For brand hashtags, the post count should be 0 or very, very low, as you are creating a unique tag.
If you’re running an Instagram campaign, having a brand hashtag will help drive participation and engagement. It will also organize all the posts that are tagged with it on a hashtag page. This is helpful if you’re using the hashtag to collect entries for a promotion or contest submissions.Hootsuite
Should I #Follow4Follow?
No. Avoid the “Follow for Follow” tags and reciprocal hashtags. Many influencers will claim this as a growth hack, but it will only attract pesky bots and spammers.
Avoid #followme, #like4like, #follow4follow, #tagsforlikes
